Our postgraduate houses enjoy the best locations in Durham City. The largest on Old Elvet is a unique property to the student market. Rarely advertised it tends to roll over year after year, one of our Phd Students stayed here for six years!
This property, complete with AGA, is a grand C18th town house with wide stairs, large rooms, garden room housing a glazed over well, sitting room and a huge garden with apple trees espalier against the walls. Old Elvet is a property not to be taken lightly. This is not and will never be a party house, but a place for study and living in space, comfort and style. You will need to be ready to respect the property which was built in 1760 and to enjoy it with care. Applicants should also be prepared to be gently but quite seriously interviewed by the existing tenants if they wish to join them in this house.
The properties which make up the site at the Whitehouse are perfectly located for study in the Library and Science site, whilst also being the closest student accommodation to the sports facilities at Maiden Castle. Here we have a large flat for one (possibly a couple), a separate duplex Annex for two (which can be arranged to provide fabulous accommodation for a couple or even a single occupancy), and the main house which is divided into four modern and up to date rooms.
Renovated completely in 2015 the main house was formerly a 5 bedroom property with large seperate lounge and kitchen. Now with four bigger rooms, two of which ensuite, the same lounge and kitchen, new shower rooms with under floor heating and a new utility room the house has been remodelled to suite Postgraduate requirements. It even boasts a whole house mechanical heat recovery system installed in 2015.
The Garage flat is a large detached light and sunny flat tucked away above the garage and accessed by a flight of steps outside the building. With views across the garden and sunshine all day long this flat is ideal for private individuals or a couple who want peace and quiet.
The Annex is a semi detached addition to the main house, entirely self contained it is modern living in peaceful surroundings. Often occupied by a couple there is the option to provide seperate rooms for two people, one on each level. There is also a large fully fitted kitchen and an upstairs shower room with walk in shower and underfloor heating. There is also a decking area to the rear of the first floor taking advantage of the sun all day long.
In the main house (The Whitehouse itself, entirely remodelled in 2015), there are three rooms upstairs, two sharing a modern shower room and one with its own en-suite. All the shower rooms have under floor heating and limestone tiled floors. On the ground floor there is a large sitting room, a utility room (also with under floor heating) and a large fully fitted kitchen. The large airy fourth letting room is also to be found on the ground floor and has a wet room ensuite. Everything is here, Smeg Dishwasher, double oven, ceramic touch control hob and stainless extractor hood. The utility room has further storage, a large fridge freezer, washer and tumble dryer. All the rooms have double (4′ wide) beds and the entire house benefits from the newly installed mechanical heat recovery system. This excellent ventilation provision removes stale air from shower rooms, the utility room (anywhere where steam may be generated) and heat exchanges this air with fresh air drawn in from outside before ejecting the stale air through vents in the roof. This process continuously dries and warms the incoming fresh air which is then pushed into the house to provide a fresh and comfortable environment.
